Botox Pre-Treatment Instructions
- Please avoid all blood-thinning medications and supplements one week before treatment to achieve optimal results and minimize the risk of bleeding or bruising at the injection site. This includes aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, Motrin, and Aleve, and fish oil and vitamin-E supplements. Do not stop taking your medication if your doctor has prescribed you aspirin or another blood thinner.
- If you are taking Plavix, Coumadin, or any other blood thinner for a medical condition, please let us know in advance.
Botox Post-Treatment Instructions
- Immediately following the injections, the most reported side effects are temporary redness and swelling at the injection site. Cold compresses can be applied directly after the treatment to reduce swelling.
- Avoid taking blood-thinning medications to avoid bruises.
- For pain relief, Tylenol (acetaminophen) is recommended.
To maximize your results after your neurotoxin treatment
- For the first 24 hours, avoid direct high heat on the treated area.
- During the first 24 hours, do not go into a sauna or steam room.
- Do not massage the injection site. For 4-8 hours after your procedure, you can exercise your facial muscles (squinting, scowling).
NOTE: Neurotoxins do not require muscle contraction to work.
Possible side effects include
- (Normal) Mild headache
- Bruising around the injection site (normal)
- Feeling of numbness or tingling at the injection site (normal)
- Injection site pressure or fullness (normal)
- If you experience droopy eyelids (ptosis), you should contact the office as soon as possible.
- An injection of neurotoxin will show resistance to movement within 5-7 days, but it may take as many as fourteen days for the full effects to be seen. Neurotoxins last on average for three to four months. To maximize the anti-aging benefits of your treatment, it is recommended that you schedule your next appointment at the time of your treatment.
